I have three sand dollars in my seashell collection. Sand dollars are not really shells, but “tests”, or the outer skeletons of the creature inside.
In my photo below, on the left, is the large, four inch “arrowhead”. It is flat and has a series of lines on the backside. I can hear the “jaws” rattling around inside.
On the right is the large “sea biscuit” which is puffy on top and concave underneath. I wrote on the bottom of this one and it says, “Sanibel 1990″. I didn’t find it along the beach, but purchased it at a shop. Don’t ask me which one or where, because I don’t recall.
The small round sand dollar in the center is a “sea cookie” and it is also puffy, and mine is broken as you can see.
While I was moving these shells around to take my photos for my new Squidoo lens, “The Sand Dollar”, one of the “doves”, or actually jaws, fell out of the cookie so I got a photo of it, which you can see in the photo below.
Please visit my new sand dollar page where I have more photos and information about this marine animal.
