Identifying Seashells: The Pink Murex

A Mollusk or Mollusc (UK spelling) is a living creature that forms a shell around itself for protection. A mollusk shell from the sea is sidely known as a seashell and there are also land molluscs which are typically snails.

The seashell is basically the outer hard coating, or exoskeleton of the creature. I find it fascinating at the variety in shape, size and color that comes about from shell creation.

I mistakenly had been labeling this shell a “Conch”, but recently found a photo online and discovered that it is a Pink Murex. I didn’t find the one pictured here. It was purchased at a Shell Shop someplace, probably on Sanibel Island while I was there on vacation. It’s over 5 inches long and for a while I had used it as a decorative Q-tip holder in the bathroom, but now it sits on a shelf.
